On the afternoon of May 23, 2006, I, Joe Ferry,
left home in Philadelphia. On May 24th arrived in Cape May,
and entered the ocean on the morning of May 25, 2006.
This would be my third attempt to try to sail
to Ireland. I had departed in July, 2004 leaving from Ocean
City, New Jersey. Three days later I sailed off the ocean and
into Block Island, Rhode Island, and went no further. In 2005,
with friend, Joe Gallagher, I tried again. Got to Bermuda, then
decided against going on. Sailed back home. This year, the centennial
year of my Dad's birth, once more, I pointed the boat East,
raised sail, and put the coast of New Jersey below the Western
horizon
June 17, 2006, the Falcarragh entered
the port of Horta, Isla Faial, Azores.
Stayed three days and nights, resting,
repairing boat, and re provisioning - water, fuel, food- before
continuing voyage.
2. From Azores to Ireland
On June 21, 2006 departed the Azores. Ireland
1200 nautical miles to the Northeast.
July 6, 2006 early in the morning
made landfall at Bere Island, County Cork, on the Southwest
coast of Ireland. Berthed at Lawrence Cove while a gale swept
Ireland.
3. Falcarragh Home
Sailed away from Bantry Bay on
July 10 going North along the West coast of Ireland to final destination,
Falcarragh, County Donegal Ireland.
Credits
Photos - all images,
still and moving, in the first two clips are by Joe Ferry. During
voyage, I used a Fuji digital camera, 2 megapixels, for the
stills and the little video clip diary. In the third video,
Falcarragh Home, showing arrival at Inis Bo Finne, photographs
were taken by Dan Ryan of Inis Bo Finne. Arrival photos at Ballyness
Pier were arranged by Josie Doohan of Falcarragh, the photographers
were Brian McDade, Liam Dugan and Declan Doherty.
Movie clips: Most
of the movie clips were made by JPF holding the camera at arm's
length and hoping for the best. In some of the movie clips,
I am addressing my brother and sisters, as well as other relatives
and friends.
Maps and charts
were taken from www.Earth.Google, edited and
optimized with Photoshop.
