Dick
Duffy
Man about Letterkenny. Dick was the son of Sarah Ferry and
John Duffy.
I never met a person in Donegal that didn't know
Dick Duffy. He had the driest wit; whenever I was with
him, I'd find myself laughing at what he said 20 minutes
earlier, and not
at all catching the present joke. I'd finally catch and
start laughing at something he said long after he'd be
gone.
He had small-motor repair shop in a corrugated tin garage
at the edge of Letterkenny, next to the bus station where
a shopping mall is nowadays.. It was said he was a great
mechanic - if you could keep him
at bench.
But
he
had
people
to see up the town, and the shop often had no Dick in it.

| Dick Duffy is on the right in this
picture at the farm, Falcarragh, 1958.
From left, Seamus Clarke, John Duffy (Dick's father),
Joe Ferry, Hughie Ferry, then Dick. The occasion
was my dad's return home after almost 29 years away
in America. . JJF took the photo. |
He came to the states once, in the late 70's early 80's .
This is a picture of him, then, with his cousin, Mary Ferry,
in Wildwood, NJ.
