- Nature and Uses of Sociology, Hx of Sociology. How knowledge is generated
in social science and social philosophy. Useful theoretical perspectives/schools
in sociology. (read Chapters 1 and 2)
Unit Two
Culture -definition;
components of culture, cultivation; symbols and meaning; custom; toolkits
and technologies; vocalic language and other types of meaning sharings;
cultural hegemony, cultural relativism, ethnocentricity, diversity/unity.
Antiquity of characteristically human forms of associating with one
another. (Read Chapter 3)
Unit Three
Socialization - process of learning
to become competent member of society; self-consciousness. (Read Chapter
4 and 5)
Social Structure - the building blocks
of associating - status and role. Groups - primary and secondary. Organic
and mechanical solidarity. Organizations, bureaucracies. (Read Chapter
6)
Gender - distinguishing between gender,
sex, and erotic sexualities. Deconstruction of gender, comparison of
females/males, boys/girls, men/women, feminine/masculine, manhoods/womanhoods.

Unit Four
Social differentiation, structural
inequalities,and social stratification (Read Chapters 8, 9, and 10)
Deviations,and control of diversities
and deviations from social norm. (Read chapter 7)
