Schooling has hidden as well as open curriculum.

History of forced schooling in US is only about 130 years old. Compulsory schooling was a movement to control/diminish child labor in industrializing country. Curricula initially was distinctly secondary concern. Quickly, training workforce, got established as goal and function of schooling. Later, schooling used as attempt to establish social equality. Independent learning, familial learning, apprenticeships, diminished as schooling captured dominance as preferred social institution for formation of citizenry. Credentially, sanctioning, bestowal of status has moved from communities, church toward schools, though fed government is also important bestower of statuses/credentials - licences, permits, degrees, certifications, charters.

Architecture of schools? Home? Factory? Institution? Office? Carceral?

Schooling functions similarly to religious liturgy and ceremony, constitutes a civic religion in U.S.

Learning

Education is learning under the assumption of scarcity (Illich, DeSchooling Society). It is possible to critique 'schooling' and to say that it is one way of learning, not the only way. Illich contends that modern schooling has gotten to the point where it interferes with learning as much as facilitates it. Another institution that is beginning to become counterproductive. People have always learned what they need to in order to live their lives; now we need industrial sized institutions to make learning available.

Learning, immense learning, is a signal attribute of persons and communities. Other animals learn, but none are as devoted or equipped for it as is humankind.

Example: of a teaching and a learning that is not a product of "Education". I tell the story of my interest in hospitality as a way out of homelessness - the story of Baucis and Philemon, trees in my front yard, pictures made by friend. I request students authorization to offer a teaching - the request comes in special clothing, making a space special, asking listeners to consider candle and cellphone as stuff that will help us get to know something. That which is learned is never what the teacher teaches, though 'educational curricula' 'skill sets', 'courses of study' try to tame and direct the learning animals. Memory and forgetfulness are part of learning - what to forget, disregard just as important as memorial, , memorable, and commemoration. "Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain"
